I think the theme is trust Because throughout the book Alex has to figure out who he can trust and who he cant.

The reason Alex is successful is because he's strong of mind, when he wants something he wont stop till he gets it. Alex is also successful because he is able to put himself in the enemies shoes, for example in snake head he hides under major yu's bed, the last place you would expect him to be.
