The last chapter on The Palantiri was also very helpful in some more background on when, where, and how they were used. This also ends the actual text of the book.

The section on The Istari (The Wizards) is one of my favorites. There is discussion of Saruman, Radagast, Curumo, Alatar, and mostly of Mithrandir (or Gandalf or Olorin). Quite the excellent background on them!

Just read the sections of The Quest for Erebor and then The Hunt for the Ring. These were great background to the stories with which we are most familiar.

I have to say I enjoyed "The History of Galadriel and Celeborn" section to conclude The 2nd Age. Though I did also enjoy the information on Sauron's rise. Onto The 3rd Age!
