interesting how although this is historical fiction..it follows history very closely....now just up to a couple of yrs before the war for independence...the colonists sensing war....those in business see great financial opportunities ahead...and are seizing the moment....rumblings about impending ...interesting alignments forming between people who would otherwise have never mixed....

interesting presentation of the design and construction of a plantation with alot of detail of all aspects of the farms, gardens,etc. along with allocation of work functions by the servants, slaves,etc., very detailed.....

up to the late 1600's and the influence of the Quakers in the area. and their anti-slavery views which were radical for the time...Michener does a great job of highlighting the conflicts between the Quakers, Catholics and Protestants in the settlement of the area. Great job of intersecting the lives of some of the key "fictitious" families in the Chesapeake Bay area.Able to get a really good sense of the times
