"I liked Sylvia, but I knew my mother didn't." Hmm. I think if I'd been a smarter reader the first time I read this, I'd have picked up on the affair with this. I know they say it doesn't start until after The Slowing, but a wife knows who not to trust.

"We didn't notice right away." As far as opening lines, it's just enough of an attention grabber to hook me, without being ridiculous.
