Tanizaki's comic touch is evident here early on, just as in The Diary of a Mad Old Man, but the book ends up being a darker thing taking me to strange, sometimes appalling, places. The writing is superb as usual, and the dual diary format for narration is a stroke of genius. A fast, compulsive read.
