I didn't read this back when these books were originally released, so I was pleased to find a copy of it on amazon. This book starts with Zoey heading off across the US to go to university in Berkeley, California. I haven't read the books immediately before this one, so don't know what went on just before. This is book # 25 in the Making Out series,

Lara has some strange dreams involving fires, and Jeff and Darla Passmore (Zoey and Benjamin's parents) are always there with her.
Lara gets an interview with a lady who runs an art gallery in Weymouth, which is just across the water from Chatham Island. Whilst there, she shows the lady a portfolio of watercolour paintings that she draws late at night. They are portraits based on people she used to know from when she lived in Boston, where Benjamin tracked her down. (Another book).
She ends up getting a trial period of work at the gallery, where is she draws more of the same type of paintings, the owner will pay for her to get them framed and for her to be able to display them at the gallery. She is happy with this, as before she was a drug addict and an alcoholic. Lara is living with the Passmores, as she is Jeff Passmore's daughter, and therefore Darla's stepdaughter. She has Zoey's bedroom. It is clear she's making an effort to turn her life around for the better. She paints in her spare time when she's not helping out at the Passmore family restaurant.
There are references throughout the book to Lara and Zoey not liking each other, and to something that happened between them. This is another reason why I must read earlier books in the series I didn't get to read back when the books were originally released, so I can fill in the plot holes for me where I missed out on some of the story because of not having read the entire series. I also want to buy the books with the new covers, as I love the series so much and like the cover art on the new ones.
