If Mércèdes hadn't insisted Fernand to accept Edmond as her husband I don't think Fernand would've done that terrible deed. Fernand was beyond jealous; Caderousse's greed knew no bounds; Danglars was itching to wipe the smile of Dantés' face: this threesome were a bomb waiting to explode! Rereading this, I can't help but think Mércèdes was at fault, although not deliberately, which made it all the worse.
