“Out in the shady place back of my cabin snow still lies under a shaggy spruce like a dingy white collar on a man who needs a hair cut. Spring is gaining, to be sure, but the tattered white patches in the woods on the north slopes of Cache Lake hills show that winter is not leaving without a fight.”

The way I (see) it, security and happiness are one and the same thing. On a stormy night when the trees thrash in the high winds that claw the eaves, I sit listening to the murmuring of the fire in the big stove, at peace with myself and the world. Give me food to keep me strong, woods to keep me warm, good friends to talk to me, fine books to read, and I have all I need. I know men who think that’s not enough.
