Okay, some of these people might not try their best to be good, but they’re still trying.

I did not expect a story about a biblical Good vs. Evil fight to contain so many nuanced characters. King does such a good job at creating flawed characters that are doing their best to be good, but are also constantly tempted by sin… yeah, okay, I see how this grey zone fits into the biblical imagery. Personal favorites of the internal struggle to not be an asshole include Larry, Nadine, and Harold.

ok but these characters are so good??? could do with some more women whose lives don’t revolve around men, but well, at least in some cases it seems to be mutual. might be an evolutionary trait that in a post-apocalyptic landscape, everyone suddenly gets very interested in procreating.

Every time a new character is introduced and I like them, I find myself holding my breath for a page because I already anticipate their death. I keep telling myself not to get attached, because somehow I feel like everyone will end up dead anyway. That’s how much this book already broke me, lol.

The white dress that Jane Baker wore on the way to Lake Pontchartrain is making me cry. Why is this book so sad??? I knew what I was getting into, but boi was I not ready for that.

Stu is such a petty little shit and I am absolutely here for it. He’s already earned my eternal respect by chapter 13, what a guy.

That chapter where King describes in painful detail how the disease spreads and how many people one (1) contact can end up infecting… chills, dude. I got chills. Already think it’s scarier than all the murder clowns in the world, but maybe Current Events[TM] have something to do with that.

Dude, SK writes so well. Like. I only read the preface so far and my fingers are already itching to scribble notes in the margins.
