Gripping first chapter, with desperation coupled with humor in a way that's poignant and genuine. If you've read Laura's Wolf, the scene will be familiar, but from a new viewpoint. At one point DJ daydreams about the perfect woman for him: gentle, sweet, playful, sexy, pack-acceptable. This is a great setup for ch. 2, where we meet assassin Echo, who's presumably his future sweetie, and ... v. different.

Fellow readers, you are going to love DJ. I adore him. And supah-tough Echo is a sweetie too.
They are the sweetest couple that were ever trapped together in an evil secret governmental base.

Reading bits aloud to family members: it's that good.
"You were imagining it, right?" DJ asked. "Now try again, but give it a happy ending."

I really love-love-love the banter between Echo and DJ, so genuinely funny, and yet not manufactured (and the two of them do still stay focused on their goals).
