I finished the first of the four novellas of this collection and I HARDLY UNDERSTOOD ANYTHING YET I FOUND MYSELF REALLY ENJOYING THE STORY. It was really confounding especially as I neared the climax and the, er, sort-of-resolution :p Still, De Mesa's prose is outstanding!

I think the last story BRIGHT MIDNIGHT might just be my favorite. It's the first time I connected with characters in this book. That's not to say that the first three were lacking but they were so fucking enigmatic that I hadn't formed an emotional connection with them. But the last one--ah, it was something I savored while reading :) Overall, what a terrific collection of novellas.

The third novella FAITH IN POISON was mind-boggling yet very, very beguiling to read. I think the collection is starting to make more sense to me now. I must commend De Mesa for coming up with stories that actually have a meaningful connection with another though there are still times I'm very confused..yet mesmerized as well.

The titular second story was IMPRESSIVE. Told only through news clippings, a radio talk show, TV reports, plus several eye-witness accounts, the novella has quite an exemplary style in narrative. It was reminiscent of both Palahnuik's RANT and Frank Miller's news story coverage of the events in The Dark Knight Returns. I enjoyed the way NEWS OF THE SHAMAN unfolded and evolved throughout the pages indeed!
