This book took quite an interesting turn. I'm not so oblivious to contemporary Japanese discourse that the full political weight of the twist is lost on me. I do wonder, however, how such outspoken condemnation of Japanese treatment of Koreans fared at the time.

Why does everything play out so nicely? There just happens to be a discovery of a 32 year old corpse belonging presumably to the suspect's lost brother right when the detective happens to be in Hokkaido? I'm not a reader of mystery novels, I don't know how heavily others rely on such chance events, but I'm not sure I'm able to put up with this kind of thing.

This is such an exciting, gripping mystery. After that horrible short story I read a few weeks ago, I will count this novel as an excellent introduction to Japanese mystery in Chinese translation.
