Christopher’s Reviews > The Trouble with Taiwan: History, the United States and a Rising China > Status Update

The author claims neutrality but makes no effort to hide his dismay towards the mainland and tolerance for the similar negatives of Taiwan. The writing style is nearly unreadable at times, not dense by any means, just poorly structured. I'm not enjoying this book, but I have broadened my perspective a little so I'll continue with it for now.

I have suffered through this extremely polemical nonsense just so I can write a most excoriating review and by god will it be excoriating! If they would have lived up to their claim at the start that they are impartial, I probably would give it three stars. But that's just the first lie or misrepresentation of more than I can count.

This is probably the most vocally polemical book I've ever read, the most one-sided, a total whitewashing of everything Taiwan and a total demonization of everything China. The fools who wrote it are either so deluded they honestly believe they are neutral or they think their readers are too big of fools to realize that they are the furthest thing from neutral.

If I finish it I'll probably give it a one star. If the author hadn't lied at the start and proclaimed himself neutral, then I'd be more generous. But to pretend you're neutral and then come out with a nonstop torrent of condemnation against one side and nothing but praise for the other reveals a lack of self awareness that should lead anybody to question their ability to handle this issue.
