Can't recall where I saw this book recommended, but I'm glad I followed the advice. Matthiessen is showing a refined craft and a surprising skill at sparse, yet illuminating characterization. I didn't know who the author was nor the subject of the book before picking this up; I hope the remainder of the book follows through with the promise of the beginning. Glad I blindly followed the advice I cannot recall reading.
