(1) Annabeth kisses Percy on the cheek, which is quite the cliché foreshadowing for a yet-to-be romance.
- eg. Hermione kissing Ron good luck before quidditch.
(2) Luke calls his subordinates "fools," which is just an odd thing for teen to say.
- How very Skeletor of him.
- Why not idiots, or twerps, or whatever the kids are saying these days?
- Though, it does underscore, albeit cartoonishly, his new persona.

(1) Polyphemus totally gets Tootsie'd by Grover.
- I wonder how many zygotes around here get that reference.
- Something tells me that transvestite humor wouldn't fly today.
(2) "[Annabeth] shimmered with health, as if someone had injected her with glitter."
- More like someone injected their fangs and made her a vampire.
(3) Percy falls asleep on top of Annabeth.
- To be fair, not much room riding a seahorse.

(1) Circe to Annabeth: "We are not so different, you and I. We both seek knowledge."
- "We are not so different, you and I" is such a Bond villain line. Though, in traditional usage, it should be followed by "in another life we might have been friends."
(2) "[Annabeth] tackled me with a hug, then pulled away just as quickly ... I hoped my face wasn’t as red as it felt."
- Ah, how very Ron and Hermione of them.

(1) Finally, Bernstein voices accents that make sense! So far, his default accent has been heavy Southern. Granted, these are Confederate soldiers he's voicing, so being sensible may not be intentional.
- Even a broken clock's right twice a day.
(2) My experience with Riordan books is the more junk food randomly present in the story the more middle-grade it is.
- We have a whole chapter dealing in donut shops.

Notes:
(1) Jesse Bernstein does a decent Tyson accent. Though, it sounds a bit too much like the Looney Tunes parody of Lennie from "Of Mice and Men."
- I keep waiting for him to say "the rabbits, George!"
(2) Speaking of accents, I hate Bernstein's Luke accent. Even if Luke was from Southern California, giving him a Valley accent makes him sound too much like "Bill and Ted" for me to take anything he says seriously.

Notes:
(1) The two snakes circling Hermes' caduceus are named George and Martha.
- Given Riordan's penchant for mixing America and Ancient Greece, it could be a reference to George and Martha Washington.
- Alternatively, it could be a reference to the classic children's books "George and Martha."
(2) Hermes plays Q from James Bond, equipping Percy with gadgets for his quest.
- Spoiler: Every one of them will be used.

Notes:
(1) It's always interesting to stumble across parallels between this series and "Harry Potter."
- Despite saving the world and having the highest status parentage, Percy is still looked down on and mocked. Not anything to do with himself, per se, but the company he keeps.
- In "Harry Potter," this is Ron, who like Tyson, lives close to destitution, and Hermione, who like Tyson, is seen as genetically inferior.

(1) "'The shadow I saw this morning—that was—' [Percy's] face felt hot. 'Oh my gods, you were looking in my bedroom window?'
'There’s no time to explain!' [Annabeth] snapped, though she looked a little red-faced herself."
- Ah, voyeurism, the seed of many a romance. How very "Back to the Future."
(2) Bernstein does a serviceable Indian accent. Though he still seems intent on making New Yorkers sound hillbilly.

Notes:
(1) My first read through, I remember postulating that Riordan experimented with going entirely middle-grade with this, but went back to trending more YA when it didn't go as he'd hoped. I wonder whether I'll come to the same conclusion this time?
(2) I'm not looking forward to Jesse Bernstein's narration.
- The only accent in his repertoire is hillbilly.

I completely agree with you on the romance thing, but that would actually ruin the books for me. I like their banter.

It seems to amount to them taking playful/frustrated jabs at each other the whole book and then complimenting one another at the end. 🤷♂️
These books are not my typical choices, so I just think they are cute. It’s light reading in between the heavier LISTS books I’m reading, so I appreciate their jabs and their apologies. It doesn’t bother me if I can figure out what’s happening before it happens either. I just need these books to wind down. I just don’t understand why everybody has to get with each other. Let’s allow the dudes and the chicks be best friends once in awhile
Bibliomysterious BAM wrote: "I just don’t understand why everybody has to get with each other. Let’s allow the dudes and the chicks be best friends once in awhile."Well, you have to factor in that these books are marketed toward adolescents, and relationship fantasies are going to be a big part of the appeal. Again, a cliché that main characters of the opposite sex will eventually get together. But, they're clichés for the simple reason that they work and people like them.
Oh I do. Ihink that may be why I pick them. Just simple. But that’s also my point I think. Sometimes the YA audience members need to know it’s okay to just be friends. I guess I’m in the minority, but that’s how I was and how I taught my daughter.

It's just that middle grade and YA books are sort of like candy: you can say they're not healthy all you want, but it won't stop kids from filling their faces 😉
