I have a feeling the novel is really about (supposed) femininity vs masculinity, but I cannot imagine this was intended. What twilight zone did I find myself in here?

The Doctor hasn't actually done any impressive doctoring yet. We're only told constantly she's great at her job.

The intrigues are so easy to see through. Because I know the Doctor is from the Culture, there's also no tension.

The bad guys are rude, stink, and they dislike women. This is so transparent.
