White is some kind of expert at writing books in which absolutely nothing happens.

The time period of the setting is kind of weird. It's explicitly the 12th century (and Uther Pendragon is William the Conqueror and 200 years old??) but the sensibilities of everything are very Victorian, and not just because Merlyn remembers backwards This is definitely done on purpose, and would make more sense if this was more solidly a comedy, but
