This is the closest thing to a Ruth Randell book that I’ve read since Ruth Randell died. None of the main characters in this book are really very likable, and that often ruins a story for me. But — similarly to Rendell — Candlish doesn’t make them one-dimensional villains; you find reasons to empathize with most of them. And the plot reminds me of an old film noir movie.
