It's interesting to see the development of capital in various countries of the world. Piketty now discusses the impact of slaves on the capital structure of the US. Slaves comprised 20% of the population of the United States in 1800 and 15% of the population in 1860. In the south slaves made up 40% of the population during the entire time prior to emancipation. Slaves represented 50% of the capital of the South!
