If I was in the story, I would want to be the sidekick and friend. The story follows Sam Gribely on his life in the Catskill Mountains. As someone who enjoys camping and is fascinated by the idea of outdoor living, I can relate to Sam's lifestyle. When I would arrive in the story, I would love to find him in his hollowed tree and help him expand his living space, hunt and tame more wild animals like Frightful.

A significant moment in Jean Craighead George's My Side of the Mountain is when Sam Gribely gets Frightful. Ever since Sam ran away from home to the Catskill Mountains, he lacked a companion entirely. Sam found a nest of baby falcons, and stole one baby female hatchling. With an animal by his side, he trained her to hunt. This is a turning point because Sam now has wildlife on his side, overcoming the conflict.

My Side of the Mountain is written in a diary that begins with a future event, making it a flashback. The novel begins where protagonist Sam Gribely describes his tree house and life in the woods. In the first chapter, Sam gives background information prior to him leaving his house to go to the Catskill Mountains, but after that first chapter, the events are written in chronological order in his diary.
