“in 2018, 337 staff on inmate incidents (sexual assault) were reported in California prisons, just 3 of those allegations were substantiated. In contrast, the prison law office reported in 2016 that out of a random sample of 80 female California inmates, nearly all had reported they had been experienced sexual abuse or harassment while incarcerated.”

Fashion Nova warehouses in California were/are under federal investigation for paying below federal minimum wage ($7.25).... so the clothes that are cool for 2 months destroy the environment AND rely on slave wages to sell.... 🫖

holy shit! One of the inmates was sentenced 36 years to life because of the “three strike” rule... she had minor drug charges (meth) and non violent burglary on her record. Actually insane to think about losing basically your entire life for minor charges.

a lot of the incarcerated women at fire camp had girlfriends, but sex was not allowed. Some Correctional Officers would ask to watch their sex in exchange for not telling on them. *vomit*

“By 1865, the constitution legally abolished slavery, except in one instance: imprisoned people.”

California relied on unpaid prison labor to build its mountain roads, that no one wanted to pay workers to build. Slavery, much??

(3/3) The justice of the peace would then have those native Californians ceased and sold at public auction. For four months, the uncompensated labor of the ceased native Americans would belong to the person who brought the charges of vagrancy.”

(2/3)... oops - Any white person under this law could declare Native Californians, who were simply strolling about, who were not gainfully employed, to be vagrants and take that charge before the justice of the peace.

(1/2) “In 1850, California passed a law, written and signed by California’s first elected governor, called the Act for the Government and Protection of Indians. This allowed white people to buy indigenous children as “apprentices.”

during reconstruction, California was the only free state to reject the 14th amendment and the 15th amendment, which guaranteed crucial civil rights for black citizens, equal protections under the law, and the right to vote.
