She has strong opinions and is comfortable talking in public. There was a panel with her and Seanan McGuire and Charlie Jane Anders. She talked about not wanting to be pigeonholed into only writing about Filipino or Asian characters. And writing a lot of fanfic and that it was a good training ground because she couldn’t afford to do a MFA. Because of the fanfic origins characters rather than setting or concept comes first.
ok, i vote everyone who wants to do a MFA writes fanfic first. Or instead.
