Instead of pursing an initial attempt to replicate the alliterative verse of the original epic, Tolkien set out to get as close as possible to the exact meaning of the poem, and ended up with a translation in a stylistic prose. I'll admit to some disappointment as I really enjoy Tolkien's poetry, in particular The Fall of Arthur, and The Legend of Sigurd and Gudrun, and was looking forward to a more poetic style.
