The Librarian is the mother figure to Joseph. The Librarian is the mother figure since she provides Joseph with spiritual and emotional nourishment, whenever she gives Joseph pictures, or updates on how his baby, Jupiter is doing. Joseph has never got to see his baby this brings him strong emotions and he'll even cry of happiness when he just sees a photo of her.

Joseph, the minor of the book is motivated by desire, Joseph is a 14 year old father who got sent to jail for trying to kill his teacher while high on pills, Joseph is now in a foster home with the Jack, the narrator. Joseph has never seen his kid and his desire motivates him to get to see his baby, even if his girlfriend doesn't want him too.

Orbiting Jupiter has a very miserable tone to it, as the mood of the book is also very depressing since a father at thirteen is unable to see his daughter. It has been a very dark book so far with not much happiness to it the only positive thing that has been expressed is hope, Hope is the only thing keeping Joseph from never being able to see his daughter.
