Grrrr. Google Reader, a site headline RSS aggregator, says to hell with y'all we're shutting down. I shift to Newsvibe. Now Newsvibe is shutting down. Why does RSS hate me?

Try Feedly. Nothing says long lasting like the fact that they recently fought off an extortionist DDS attack for three days and came out singing.

I agree with Aubrey, Feedly is where it's at.
By the way, not sure if you've seen this but I also like/use https://www.instapaper.com for TBR articles where I don't care for their RSS feed, or websites with good content but weird styling (like small/weird/"colourful" fonts, etc...). It also gives you nice little things like progress (saves where you stopped reading so you can later on get back to it -- I think very useful for long articles), highlighting, different font settings, categorisation, etc... Check it out, maybe you like it.
Thank you JPablo, I will check that out. I'm most interested in high-content lo-graphics layout. It irks me when sites and blogs let their urge to look "creative" overrule readability.
