I finished the next stories: "The Slithering Shadow", "The Pool of the Black One" and "Gods Of The North". All three are decent additions to the collection, but they don't count among the best of the stories I've read so far. In the first Conan stumbles upon a lost city in the desert inhabited by the demon Thog. The second follows Conan on a pirate vessel to a remote island. The last story brings Conan to the North.

“Shadows in the Moonlight”: after surviving a massacre that claimed his army, Conan stumbles upon the responsible of the act. By killing him he also saves a princess. Together the two flee by boat and arrive on an abandoned island. But as is to be expected, there’s more to it than meets the eye. Again a short story with good writing and superb pacing in this one!

“Rogues in the House”: Conan gets involved into a feud between the red priest Nabonidus and the nobleman Murilo. This leads him to be trapped in a dungeon. In order to break free he’ll have to take on an unexpected foe in the end. It’s a pretty straightforward tale about taking down another enemy. Don’t expect much expansion on the world. Just another fun read in the Conan collection!

I finished the short story ‘Black Colossus’ today. Another interesting adventure for Conan. We learn some more about the world and a new danger. It’s only later in the story that Conan is introduced; he’s approached by princess Yasmela to save her kingdom. He has to lead her army against the desert army of Natohk and prevent an invasion.

I started this with not too much expectations, but I'm positively surprised after the first three stories. Foremost the writing isn't dated, I expected it to be, but it isn't. The character Conan also withstood the test of time; he's often depicted as a barbarian, but the stories show he's more than that (even an intelligent ruler). The stories themselves are also really good; straight to the point, but fun to read.
