Very slow, and very rich. Modernism entails the substitution of substance with flux, being with beoming...; the rejection of Aristotle, and the replacement of him with Whitehead. When I have the time to develop this idea at greater length, it will make more sense (I trust) and will prove to be a critical insight. Meanwhile, a very good book, though quite abstract.

A bit dry and academic - but still illuminating; and I am certainly learning from it. I am almost up to the section where he begins to discuss early Picasso. I understand now (finally), e.g., why Gauguin is considered a "Symbolist". GHH presupposes familiarity with the artists he discusses. There is a generous collection of plates in the back of the book, but they are in black and white, and not always helpful.
