Death is the narrator. He is watching Liesel and her family on the train. Liesel and her brother Werner are on their way to be adopted because their mother does not want them. On the train, Werner dies and Liesel and her mother must bury him in the middle of nowhere.

I would definitely recommend this book to someone who likes reading about Holocaust. However, since this book is written from a German perspective, it’s different. I would also recommend this book to males or females since there are many different characters. Finally, I would recommend this book to teens and adults because the content is more mature.

I keep imagining Max living in Liesel’s basement. His room in the basement is just a sheet, paint cans to sit on, and blankets. He doesn’t have a real bed or real food, but he is living and has escaped being sent to a concentration camp.

It’s hard to believe that Hans and Rosa risked their lives to hide Max. Liesel feels like she doesn’t really know who they are because they are taking this risk, but at the same time, Liesel is happy that Max is now staying with their family.

At first I thought Liesel was a quiet, shy girl. Now I know that she’s a tough cookie. She steals, she swears, and she dominates the soccer games.

I felt like crying when Liesel explained how embarrassed she was when her classmates made fun of her for being unable to read. When she was supposed to read from her book in front of the class, she got so scared that instead of trying to read her book, she recited words from The Gravedigger’s Handbook. I can only imagine how badly she felt about herself after this, especially after all she’s been through.

When I was reading about Rudy, I started to think about how Rudy and Liesel might end up being more than just friends because it’s clear that Rudy already cares for Liesel in the way he treats her and shows her around her new home.
