Well, this book got depressing/boring really quick. It's at that point where the protagonist feels like he's back to being unhappy with life. Hopefully it turns around soon.

Oh wow. How did I not find this earlier?! It's really good. It has a very likeable writing style and I feel like I could relate to the main character (Quentin), minus the magic part. It's too bad I probably won't finish this when the school year ends...
