wow. some really nice bartender gave the family some milk since they can't afford it and water with sugar he says is not good for babies. How many people would do that?

The beginning of the book was kind of confusing but now I understand what is going on. It must be extremely frustrating for the mother when the father finally gets a job buts spends all the money he earns on whiskey. Its as if he didn't care that all four of his children are starving.
