Chapters 37-38:
(1) Wow, that's the most consequential death we've had in a while... perhaps ever!
- So unexpected too.
(2) As light and fun as the last volume was, I get the sense this one's going to be a real downer.
- Still fun though.
(3) Of all the gratuitous nudity in this series, the scene in the first issue has to be the most "I didn't need to see that" of them all.

Chapters 39-42:
(1) Well, that was bleak. Though, not as bleak as I expected, so there's that.
(2) As is typical with each volume, we lose some characters and we gain some characters.
- The Renaissance-looking guy with the blunderbuss, feathered cloak and faceted mask looks cool, at least.
(3) Deaths would really mean more if people stuck around for more than just a volume.

Reading all your updates has me like "maybe I should actually read this series" because some of it sounds pretty interesting but then your 3rd point here is really the reason I won't

It's not exactly suited if you're in the least bit squeamish about sex and violence. Mind you, it's not exceedingly graphic all the time, but when it is, it really is.
Unexpected deaths aren't always a good thing. A great many author liks to kill off characters for shock value, without thinking how it impacts the story itself.

Yes! The older Hazel gets the darker and more mature the tone seems to get too. Which is really cool if you ask me.
Alexandra Elend Wolf wrote: "Yes! The older Hazel gets the darker and more mature the tone seems to get too. Which is really cool if you ask me."I'd say that's generally true. The volume before this was really light, cute even, though that's a notable exception. The general trend has been to more mature storytelling. It certainly relies a lot less on shock value and unease as it did earlier on.

I forgot to add on my previous message but I also find it fascinating because it can be easily attributed to the fact that as Hazel grows she sees everything more as it is and less with the lenses of childhood and innocence.
You could say, therefore, that the tone maturing and changing is Hazel realizing how precarious their situation is and the levity of earlier volumes was due to her having a more fantastical, awed view of those events, as they would have been told to her through stories and she wouldn't really remember them as she would these later volumes. Since, after all, Hazel IS the narrator of the sesries.

I will make sure to pay attention to that in the upcoming volumes :)

What can I say, your posts inspire me to think over this series *shrugs*
