Claire is so independent in her home life but isn't with her friends. She has to be independent at home because her mother is drunk and unstable, why not in her average life?

I am mostly wondering why Claire hangs out with these mean girls? They were rude to her and treated her awfully because she had cancer. Claire could not control her illness, she even said so.
