this book has been on my list of things to read so long that i didn’t even look at the description when i found the entire series at the used bookstore. the first sentence is literally “gemma doyle isn’t like other girls” and the misogyny is already here. oh well. very much a product of 2003

respectfully, yikes to just about everything in this. it has not aged well since 2003. the anti-romani sentiment is very pronounced, with a side of fatphobia. i made the commitment to buy the whole series and have all the audiobooks borrowed from the library. i’m gonna try to get through the series to see if it gets better, but really not enjoying it rn
