Bean and Joe decided they were going to slash the tires of Maddox's car. Joe ends up getting arrested and whipped by his father with a belt. The girls finally get a hold of their mother, who comes down to Byler. She decides to homeschool Liz for the rest of the year, while Bean still attends school. Liz court date finally arrives, and the chapter ends with Bean giving her a thumbs up for good luck

Liz has decided she wants to pick up guitar, and goes to the bank to draw out money. Maddox has switched her money into an account she can't touch for a year. Furious, she tries to get her money back but instead gets beaten and almost raped by him. Bean and Liz file a lawsuit against him. In school they are mocked. Bean is suspended for sticking up for her sister. Bean decides she will kill Mr. Maddox

Liz and Bean have found a job working at Mr. Maddox's house. He pays them by the work they do, not by the hour and tends to be very mean to his wife. Him and Uncle Tinsley had a clash over the Holladays factory which Maddox took over. The girls receive phone calls from their mom every week. She says life in NY is hard and there are no good public schools. She tells the girls to start school in Byler that year

In the mean time in Byler, Bean finds out who were aunt, uncle, and cousins are (including how her father died). It has been 5 weeks and 2 days until the girls mother shows up to take them. She takes them to Richmond on the way to NYC where she has a mental breakdown at a hotel and store. The girls are taken back with their uncle and are trying to look for jobs. Bean is given her dads silver star from his army days.

The silver star starts out in Lost Lake, Cali. The mom makes up a fake boyfriend and when she is found out, she disappears. Soon the cops show up to take the girls into custody for foster care, the two sisters (Jean aka Bean and Liz) than take off to Virgina. They end up at their Uncle Tinsleys house who takes them in momentarily until their mom comes from them.
