labour costs in Japan and Korea ran neck and neck in the late 1960s., and had other costs been considered, the overall position of Korean producers would probably have appeared even less favourable.

Korean education places heavy stress on moral education and discipline, and Korea's colonial government was interested mainly in ensuring the existence of a labour force in Korea that possessed the rudimentary education required to carry out orders from factory managers who were for the most part Japanese. It reminds me of Doi's theory of 甘え(amae?) which is Japanese but similar

korea's trade ratio and coefficient are similar to hong kong, Singapore and Taiwan, which are much smaller countries... they're probably so dependent on exports from the Japanese rule, they just never got out of the system. this book is quite old though (from the 90s?) so it'll be more interesting to see how/ if things are different now and if they're less reliant on exporting
