T.'s hypothesis for the origin and perplexity of philosophical problems is quite creative and in many aspects persuasive; it certainly deserves some attention in metaphilosophical debates. That being said, I'm not convinced by his claim that phil. has a unified subject-matter, and I also find his assertion that we have "discovered" nihilism and therefore made phil. progress dubious - perhaps even betraying - at best.

Finished intro and ch. 1. A really nice presentation of T.'s conception of nihilism and critiques against the recent literature on the meaning of life. I also liked his discussion about Heidegger. One thing that still bothers me, though, is the lack of any clear argument for nihilism; I believe T. simply assumes its truth given his acceptance of the brute fact view about there being something and not nothing.
