'Roman civilisation in Britannia was effectively limited to what is today southern England.' (p.6) - basically along the Jurassic divide that splits England in two, and also, coincidentally, along the line of those tribes that minted coins and those that didn't. Hawes traces the physical and symbolic North/South divide in England back to pre-Roman times, and argues that England's lack of identity arises from this.
