The main character Hazel Lancaster is 17 years old and she goes to a cancer support group because she has thyroid cancer that spread to her lungs. She meets this guy named Augustus Waters and he is at the support group supporting his friend, Issac. Issac has eye cancer and he had to get one of his eye removed.

A week later after both reading each other's favorite books, they discuss the characters and the meanings on the books. An Imperial Affliction is Hazel's favorite book and it is about a girl surviving cancer just like she is. Augustus's favorite book was The Price of Dawn.

After their first cancer meeting, Augustus asks Hazel is she wanted to go back to his house to watch a movie. She agreed and they watched while talking about their cancer. Augustus said he had osteosarcoma but it went away when he got his leg amputated. Before they go home they both decide to read each other's favorite books.
