It's now 1812 & Napoleon has invaded Russia, & it's going poorly for the Russians. Tolstoy comments again on lying soldiers, generals, & politicians, as well as forbidden love, senility, "the law of retrospection"; prayer, doctors, & the amity/enmity complex, though he didn't know it by its name, only the human condition.

I am blown away. Moscow has been occupied - the Russians abandoned it w/o a fight. Tolstoy writes with such clarity & insight into the soul of people & events - it is just stunning. the things that matter have not changed.

Ok, I've slowed down - there is SO much to digest about the human condition AND NOW - Tolstoy inserts himself, apart from the narrator: The author makes an argument (783-788) apart from all the discourse & questions debated. It is: "that the course of world events is predestined from on high, depends on the coincidence of all the wills of the people participating in those events." Put that in your pipe & smoke it.

Finished the 1st battle scene & am back to the "Peace" part w/ Pierre, Tolstoy's avatar, who has become extremely wealthy through unforeseen inheritance & now so very popular (w, of course, The Beauty) The Writing reads like a movie, as reader - I am there. Gripping!
