Up to diaries of 1956.Racism seems to be fading ,although Churchill did suggest to his cabinet fighting an election on the slogan,"Keep Britain White."

Now into the diaries from the 1950s.Again ,evidence of the racism in British society, even among people on the left.Labour cabinet Minister, Hugh Dalton, tells the PM, Attlee, he does not want to be moved to the "Colonial Office" as he would have to "deal with indolent niggers."

Just been reading a 1937 diary entry by Virginia Woolf, leading member of the Bloomsbury Set,she was a liberal and a socialist.Very surprised to find her ,when she goes to a concert in aid of the Spanish Republic, describing Paul Robeson as "a sympathetic and malleable nigger."it shows just how far racism was endemic in 30's Britain, even in her left wing circle

Just got up to abdication in 1936.Also liked Virginia Woolfs comment on 1929 election. She and her housemaid were both supporting Labour but Virginia was not sure she wanted to live in a country ruled by people like her housemaid!
