The crab is a symbol of joy and life because it keeps pi from starving and it brings him joy when he eats it because it taste so good

Pi gets really thirsty and hungry so he opens up the tarpaulin to see if he can find some rashins on the boat but he knows he has to be careful because Richard Parker is on the boat and he dose'nt want to die yet.
