Picked this back up after a long break and I’m tempted to put it back down. Bea’s constant moping over her insecurities is tiresome, as are her doom-and-gloom assumptions about her future with the Duke (and she’s still allowing her aunt to walk over her!) Bea has to be the most pessimistic duchess-to-be ever. I really want to finish this since this is supposed to be the long-awaited engagement book, but UGH.

Two chapter in and already this is trying my patience. Instead of a satisfying continuation of the engagement scene, we (and Beatrice) have been subjected to over a chapter of listening to her aunt’s never-ending cruel comments. Why does Beatrice not at least try to stand up for herself when her own aunt is implying that the Duke’s engagement to her is a mistake?

The author should’ve either prolonged the slow-burn between the duke and bea beyond the third book, or had bea abandon her insecurities. With the prospect of marrying the man she loves and becoming a duchess in the bargain her moping makes no sense.

It gets better. It takes Bea a long time to start to overcome the emotional abuse she suffered with her aunt and uncle. She still lacks self-confidence but she and Damien talk about their issues which is nice.

I can understand the ongoing insecurity issues, but it’s still silly how much moping she was doing immediately after the engagement - she didn’t even seem to want to be alone with him when he called on her.

I can understand Bea’s insecurities even if I don’t enjoy her wallowing in them, but her acting as if she’s being dragged to the gallows when she was the one to “propose” only a week? A few weeks? prior to that is just baffling.
