How did Thatcher retain a sense of self and purpose after he fought in World War Two? Laurel's husband, Derby, fought in the same war but was never the same afterward. In fact, he eventually committed suicide because of post-war depression. Thatcher, on the other hand, has completely unchanged thoughts and actions. He managed to maintain his positive attitude, and even his goals coming out of the war are the same.
