Well, it certainly isn't Housekeeping. It's more like a documentary of the power of a priest within a small community. I expect any second now for someone to say, they don't think the theory of evolution should be taught in school, since it ain't in the Holy Bible. I have a sneaking suspicion I may not like this novel. So far it's a major turn-off, but I'll wait some more before I make up my mind.

There's that writer's technique, that a character is fleshed out in the way he or she is percieved, described, by comments, thoughts they stir in the minds of other protagonists. Reading Glory's contemplations about her brother Jack don't make understanding Jack any easier. She is clearly feeling her way in the dark too. MR skirted the technique somehow. Fascinating.
