So it's a retelling of "The Little Mermaid" fairytale.

This is NA, not YA.

It's pathetic when the protagonist turns into the clichéd girl who fell for the player... And it's annoying when, for no good reason, the player fuckboy changes his ways just for her. Massive Eyeroll.

This is a lot more complex than the usual YA plot.

"...the fragile silver hopes yet unspoken, yet unbroken."

"...in him was a deep well of bitterness, the kind that could swirl and tug and yank you under before you even realized you'd gotten your feet wet."

This ultra level of fuckboy is plain old disturbing. He's like a petri-dish of STDs.
