I just re-read this about six months ago - I think Gaiman has a tendency to start things brilliantly and end them indifferently.

From various sources, it builds to something great, but I get what you mean "indifferently" at some point it felt like autopilot mode writing, but now I am at a very good point 😀 (less)

When you say it builds to something great, I wonder if you're thinking of The Kindly Ones - if so I agree it's a highpoint of the series. I'm thinking of several of the arcs that personally I thought ended with more of a whimper than a bang, like Season of Mists and A Game of You.

These two were very disappointing, A game of you was tedious, and in season of mist I was expecting more from sandman and Lucifer confrontation. Lucifer's giving up on everything made the whole thing meh 😕 can't wait to read the kindly ones.
