On this page and the few before it talks about how reading aloud helps to build vocabulary. It even suggests books on tapes if you as the parent are a weak reader! You can do this!

There are some amazing testimonies in this chapter! This book has made a big impact on a lot of people. I wish I had found it earlier.

In chapter 5 I learned a lot about silent reading.mi use to retreat with my book but I learned that reading in front of them was better. Best of all get them to read silently too! Still get much needed quiet time and they benefit! What could be better?

I love that he gives tips for illiterate or semi literate parents and how to keep teens interested in reading aloud! I also enjoyed the section on why fairy tales are important. I must admit I have always loved fairy tales!

In this chapter he talks a lot about what to read at which age. The section on pg 56 is not to be missed! Will a video do my child as well as a book? Short answer is no. Anything more than 10 hrs of TV or video a week and it looses the educational value.

I learned a lot about how reading aloud could help children raise their test scores among other things. My favorite part of this chapter is where he talks about educating the heart! I feel educating the heart should come first. I love how he talks about background knowledge too. It is important to get your kids out to experience things. There are plenty of cheap and free things to do with kids.

The thing that stood out to me the most in the first chapter was the section on reading aloud & silent reading at an at risk school. Simply amazing

I love the section on background knowledge! It is important to read aloud but it is also important to give your child as many experiences as you can. You can find many free activities to take children to. I also love the statistics he puts in this first chapter.

It is important for Dad's to participate because boys show lower test scores in reading. I also love that in the introduction he tells you reading is more important than TV. He states anymore than 10 hrs of TV it loses all educational value.

I can not get over how much information was packed into the introduction! The last section is about the Father's role! It is important for him to be as involved as possible.
