The ugly aliens from the crashed cylinder have shot a "heat ray" and killed some people. It is difficult for the narrator to realize what exactly happened, since he was so surprised. The aliens will do something major soon, since the narrator foreshadows with this sentence: “I did not know it, but that was the last civilised dinner I was to eat for very many strange and terrible days.”

The martians now have a new weapon: suffocating, black smoke that is shot out in rockets. London is in danger because of the militia's crippled forces.

It is interesting to read about the curate and narrator's diffrent viewpoints and attitudes on the martian attacks. The curate seems to think humans don't deserve this treatment, and the attacks must be the work of God. The narrator is straight forward in his thinking and says it is just an alien attack, nothing else.

This chapter was action packed. A tripod was destroyed and fell into the river the narrator was hiding in to escape the heat ray. The humans turned the tide of the war a little, but I think the martians have the advantage.

The war must be pretty bad now, since giant alien tripods are walking about, and a soldier tells the narrator about his battle experiences. The army is no match for the martians.

Everybody in Woking is sure the military could just kill the aliens quickly, and are not very worried at all. I think their minds got changed pretty quickly when the second alien cylinder started shooting heat rays again. The narrator's escape to Leatherhead might bring some safety, but not for long.

The nameless narrator describes how self centered humans are. In the book, Mars had life far before Earth did, so they were much more advanced technologically. This is a very good point made by the author. A mysterious metal object has fallen from Mars as well. I think it is a tripod, the giant alien machines.

I have seen the movie of this book with Tom Cruise, and I liked it a lot. By reading the book I can see how different the two are. The book tends to be better than the film most of the time.
