The most attractive idea here - more ancient than Christianity - is the presence of order and music within the very fabric of Creation. First heard that in Tolikien's Silmarillion, but then discovered that Church Fathers like Cyril of Jerusalem took it for granted.

The home stretch is Isaias' Suffering Servant. This has been a great book. A solid four-star, in spite of some loopy, gnostic material.

And now for the last and most intriguing chapter: the mystical figure of the Suffering Servant. Very controversial since the Christians took it up to describe Christ.

Gets a bit sketchy here, with the use of gnostic texts to describe the celestial throne as some type of higher goddess figure. Onward.

This is the book I've been looking for since I began reading theology. It's interesting to hear that Pythagoras and his following were heavily influenced by the priests of Solomon's Temple, and gave an inheritance to Greek philosophy, which was then returned to the Jews and the Christians in the time immediately after Christ. Terrific.

Very interesting indeed. I've heard before that the LXX was the best and most ancient of all the translations of the Hebrew Bible. But I can't remember hearing that it had itself been tampered with by Origen to make it conform to the then current Hebrew texts.

Just the introduction and this is already marvellous.
