Exceedingly boring chapter for me, "The March." (love the technique of title ing chapters!) Lots of summary and description, some better moments of interaction but with nobody I care about aside from MC, so despite being well written, not so interesting. Travel is long and tiresome, encampment is dreadful, battle is shocking and disturbing, blah, blah, blah. Boring. Next chapter is entitled "Battle." Not promising.

So tired. I'm gonna set this aside for now... I love the writer's skill, just not where the themes and focuses have gone with this novel. I see she has another book. I'm gonna skip over there and try that one; the subjects and characters sound more to my interest than where this current story has progressed.

Oh for the love of--! Now I gotta sit through a fucking het scene with the mc?! Fuck that. Skipping... skipping... skipping... Ah-ha! Part three! I see Asan's POV! Thank the ever lovin ' gods. I don't usually continue a book when I have had to skip large chunks (part two, eat my shorts!), but because part one was so delicious, I'm gonna give part three a chance.

Well, "The General" was a bomb for me and "Khamal" was so dull (battle scenes... ehhhhhh), I'm ashamed to admit it, but I did a search for "Asan" (the beggar boy's name) to skip to when either the boy himself or the topic of him reappeared. (He was the best thing about the story!) I found the scene where Raheed is asking to return to the village and bring Asam with him... three years have past. Onward, ho!

What the--?! Part 2 already? ch 5 "Kindness" ends wonderfully. Heck, who am I kidding, ch 5 is rereadable, for the emotional effect, for the tight writing cleverness, for the development of the story... for everything. Ch 6 "The March" begins worrisomely. I'm alarmed: our two MCs are separated. Are they perhaps not the two MCs after all? There was one strong secondary character but I wasn't as committed to him....

Oh my GOD. IMMEDIATE TEARS. Man, can this Wanda lassy dig right into my brain and heart with her emotion descriptions, scene descriptions, and dialogues.

Imagine being born deaf and... abandoned. All you'd know is that you couldn't communicate the way other people could....

I'm visualizing the market, the people, the community, etc. similar to the manga Gorgeous Carat: child Ray as the beggar boy, and teenager Azura as Raheed.

And the characters are not all bad or all good: Jhali, another soldier, is cruel to the beggar boy, but still, he has a background that makes me connect to him, and he has a friendship, a brother-bond, with the mc that goes contrary to his cruelty. The other soldier likes and dislikes him, just as I do. Still early in my reading, but here's to this story breaking my run of books that cause dismayed shouts: "Balls!"
